London Marathon - The 1997 Race Details

Both races ended in an exciting sprint finish.

Men's Race

  • Men's winner: Antonio Pinto (Portugal) - 2 hrs 7 mins 55 sec. - new course record

Pinto, last won here in 1992, notched up his third career victory in 10 outings over the marathon distance

2nd place - Stefano Baldini (Italy) 2 hrs 7 mins 57 sec.

3rd place - Olympic champion Josiah Thugwane (South Africa) 2hrs 08mins 06secs

Improved his personal best by three-and-a-half minutes.

Women's Race

  • Women's winner: Joyce Chepchumba (Keyna) - 2hrs 26mins 51secs - new national record

    Defending champion Liz McColgan (UK) was pipped on the line into second place.
    McColgan set a personal best of 2hrs 26mins 53secs but was beaten by into second place.

For the Record Book:

  • It was a new course record

  • A record 29,135 people completed the 1997 Marathon...

  • Portugal's Antonio Pinto and Joyce Chepchumba of Kenya were crowned 1997 Flora London Marathon champions after the most exciting double finish in the seventeen year history of the event.

  • Pinto, winner in 1992, edged out Italian Stefano Baldini by two seconds in 2:07:55, breaking Steve Jones's course record of 2:08:16 which had stood since 1985.

  • Chepchumba turned the tables on defending champion Liz McColgan of Britain who outpaced
    her in last year's race. Chepchumba clocked 2:26:51 beating McColgan by just one second.

Greenwich England is where East meets West at the Greenwich Meridian (0° Longitude); World Time is set Greenwich Mean Time. Remember the new millennium started in 2001.

The London Marathon starts in Greenwich Park every Spring.

Greenwich has a long heritage; it was the birth place of King Henry VIII and his daughters Queen Mary (Bloody Mary) and Queen Elizabeth I (The Virgin Queen).  All the English monarchs can be found at Royal History.

It has seen many famous visitors from Peter the Great through Charles Dickens to Bob Hope.  This and a lot more in Greenwich Past.
